How can I determine if my child meets criteria for Autism?
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured, standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, play/imaginative use of materials, and restricted and repetitive behaviors for individuals who have been referred because of possible autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The ADOS-2 is a revision of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, which has been referred to as the “gold standard” observational assessment for diagnosing ASD. Dr. Duke is one of the few private practice professionals in the area trained to administer this assessment. Children as young as 12-months, regardless of verbal ability, can be assessed using the ADOS-2.
Why is an accurate diagnosis necessary?
Through obtaining an accurate diagnosis, individuals and families can begin to access appropriate intervention services, obtain individualized behavioral and educational programs, and determine patterns of strengths and weaknesses at the current developmental level. Determining an accurate diagnosis is a first step for a clinician in defining a treatment plan for a child. Official diagnostic reports completed by a licensed clinical psychologist are often required by legislative authorities to obtain financial benefits and by schools to obtain special education accommodations. The ADOS-2 creates a “social world” in which behaviors related to the autism spectrum can be observed and operationalized according to a validated measure (Nanclares- Nogués, 2012).
The ADOS-2 is not a cognitive assessment; it is designed to measure atypical development in the areas of social interaction, communication, and imaginative use of materials. The ADOS-2 provides useful information for parents and teachers about specific abnormalities in social communication/creative play that can serve to develop specialized interventions to practice in the child’s home. The results of the ADOS-2 result in a classification, not a diagnosis by itself. However, the new algorithms line up perfectly for the new DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). Additional testing is available to be completed for a full, comprehensive psychological battery. Dr. Duke offers complete psychological testing services including the ADOS-2. No medical referral necessary. Lower out-of-pocket costs and significantly shorter wait-list time than those at a major hospital/medical facility. Please contact Dr. Duke for a complementary consultation to assess how you can assist your child’s development.
